Valentine - Carol Peace

Following her landmark retrospective show two years ago, acclaimed sculptor Carol Peace returns to show in Bristol at the 5000 square foot main event building at Paintworks. This cavernous space will provide the backdrop to a whole new body of work.

Inspired by the opening of the Bristol Drawing School, Carol has undergone a period of intense study into drawing. You will be able to see many of the artist's working sketches, which are fascinating; the quick seemingly effortless marks that can only come through study and an intense concentration within the life room. She describes it as "just a desperate attempt to describe this fantastic thing in front of me."

While some of her charcoals contain this energy, her sculpture is often quieter, contemplative, sometime very small, sometimes describing the intimate but always strong.

There will be some uncharacteristic and surprising pieces in the collection, in some Carol seems to have undressed the sculptures and just left their clothes!

Huge empty dresses, like vessels, tower over her studio space. "It is uncharted territory for me, on the one hand I have no idea what I am doing and on the other, the image became so entrenched in me I couldn’t not do it. That is the fun of exhibiting in a huge space like Paintworks, you can allow yourself to experiment, to really push ideas."

Over 100 sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints on display.

Schools and community groups welcome to come and draw weekdays.
